newsvine, groups, meta, june, hiatus
By Brian Ford

I've been active on Newsvine since November of 2005, pretty much nonstop. As a result, I'm taking some time off, primarily in an effort to see if I can be more productive elsewhere and, frankly, because I'm curious to see how long I can last on a self-imposed Newsvine hiatus. I've never really tried. It's a lot of work to maintain a presence here, and, anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the site progresses from an outside vantage point.

It's not because of any given meta dispute: I still don't care much that Dennis left or that Eric was banned or that the JDL is a shadow organization that is secretly running Newsvine or that so and so is still here or that such and such is an @!$%#. In order: He did, he deserved it, they're not, they are and he/she probably is. Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on. Peh.

Plus, I've got a bunch of video games to catch up on.

So, no new comments, no new seeds, no new articles, no bug reports, no reports of any kind. I'll probably lurk and read because, well, I don't have that much willpower. I'm thinking of seeing if I can make it to June under this arrangement and will then weigh my options. I considered sticking around through the end of Lost, because unfortunately this means I'll miss out on participating on Steve's excellent Lost in the Vines threads but decided that there will always be some sort of reason to avoid a hiatus, and I may as well draw a line in the sand.

Some housekeeping, also known as "the point" of this announcement:

  • Groups: I'm not going out of my way to give them to anyone, but if anyone wants any group I own, feel free to contact Tyler and tell him you want it. First come first served. Once you own it, feel free to do with them what you will. I won't be approving or rejecting any requests if no one steps up, though, so...sorry. If you want a group, don't ask me, don't contact me. Ask Tyler or Calvin or whoever, because I'm just going to tell you to do that (or ignore your request) when you ask so you'll be wasting your time and someone else may jump ahead of you while you wait for a response from me.

The groups I own:

  1. Bazaar
  2. Journalism on Newsvine
  3. Jump the Shark
  4. Movies, etc.
  5. Newsvine Survivor
  6. The Infinite Loop
  7. Look Again

My Tiger Woods moment starts...

NOW!

My Tiger Woods moment starts...

Youre going to go have sex with lots of women? Sorry I couldn't resist.

Off to see about grabbing your movies and journalism groups

Hope your hiatus goes well. I've been reading a book about Doonesbury and a significant part of it is about how much crap he got over taking a hiatus but then when he came back his wit and his drawing had improved.

Brian, good luck but please don't stay too long. The few times I have been able to get away had more to do with traveling and how busy I was elsewhere but I did learn a few things while gone. Things change, people leave, great articles are written and newbies gave me the heebie jeebies when I returned. Not the newbies fault, just my opposition to change kicking in and I got to be friends with them in due time. If I notice some kind of emergency need I will email you. Thanks for being here.

Another navel-gazing, self important bit of fluff that is neither here, nor there. That you actually think your absence is something that warrants preemptive explanation tells one all one needs to know.

But enjoy your hiatus anyway, if that's what you want.

Obviously you did not do any of that in your time off

Perhaps, when done in private, not as a pious exhibition.

What's of no value is this article, so it will be handy in that regard for me, too.

Yes, I've had month to contemplate the abject inconsistency of the moderation. It's hard to take your medicine when the NV sacred cows get away with so much. I get suspended for expressing an honest belief but the person who calls me a @!$%#wit (on the same thread) gets nothing. I, apparently, can be called every name in the book including traitor and it can be said that I have a venereal disease and nary a peep out of management. By Tyler's examples, it can be reasonably inferred that it is open season on me. Oh, well, that's just the way it is and I will try and deal with it as best I can.

There are groups of viners who are expert at dancing on that thin line
between CoH violation and non-violation . Although I have not read the
thread where the mess happened to you , I heard about it .
It seems you walked into a hornet's nest w/o realizing it .
The key , IMO , is to not lose your cool in a situation like that .

There was no dancing in the examples mentioned, it was blatant and unambiguous, but I do know what you mean.

Although I have not read the
thread where the mess happened to you , I heard about it .

And now no one can, it's been deleted at the request of the now former member

You're probably right about that. It's difficult sometimes, when passions are aflame, as they say.

Actually the word "@!$%#wit" , although it sounds highly
insulting , has ambiguous meaning .
How would you even define it's meaning ?

Yes , it can be difficult . That is why it is good to have

It sounds insulting because it is (kinda like "dickweed" or "@!$%#wad", no actual meaning but an insult nonetheless); and the context in which it was used left no doubt. Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect a suspension for it's user but a reprimand or warning would have been nice.

Insulting , yes ; But if it has no definable meaning
then there is no clear CoH violation .
Now do you get my description about "dancing on
the thin line" ?

Insulting , yes ; But if it has no definable meaning
then there is no clear CoH violation .

That isn't true. It is violation of number 1 of the CoH:

Above all else, respect others. Address issues and arguments and refrain from making personal attacks...

I've seen Krishna get suspended for no discernible violation at all; in the opinion of Tyler he violated the "spirit" of the CoH by making a provocative (but CoH compliant) comment on an old thread. Nothing of the sort would have ever happened to an RAV (read: sacred cow) awardee such as DPM. He and others always seem to get the benefit of the doubt. I've also seen Bill Harrison get suspended on a very minor violation (he hasn't been back since, btw)

#8.15 - Mon Mar 8, 2010 3:40 PM EST

Yes , the RAV effect is certainly part of it .
But so is the skill at thin line dancing .
And it is unfortunate that Krishna got
a suspension . However there were other
suspensions in that thread .
It is possible that the real reason for K's
suspension was political to "balance out"
the other suspensions .

And that's his opinion as well and for the record he wasn't upset about it at all. But it isn't right and it shouldn't be necessary to subvert CoH enforcement to "political considerations".

Yup. Everyone. I guess he felt the need for whatever reason. Nice to know it wasn't personal. I wondered the same thing about myself until I checked it out. Brian has been here for a long time, so I understand the need for a break. I've done it myself...sometimes with stronger emotions than others. There are days when I want to walk away & never look back, but it usually passes. I do learn a lot here and have made some good friends, so it's worth it from that standpoint. We all have different tolerance levels. We all have stuff going on in our lives. Sometimes a break is exactly what we need to get some things in order.

Yes, too bad Brian had to leave at this particular moment. But, I think I have a pleasant surprise for him, at least one. I just posted an article that should tickle his toes. It is such a revealing article that I am sure Brian will forgive me for heisting his thread momentarily. Thanks. It's important to step back, re-group, reevaluate and look around, change routines and find inspiration and insight in different people and different places...doing different things. It becomes easy and comfortable to become mired in the "familiar" as a known commodity. Sometimes too comfortable, too predictable, which eventually morphs into the boring and trite same-mole same-mole oblah-de-oblah-da. The names will change, trolls will come and go, and people will continue to cast their thoughts into the cosmic pond with the hope that their pebble and resulting ripple will somehow make a difference to some faceless mind in cyberspace. Take a road-trip, see new sights, meet new people, risk the unknown and embrace the adventure of doing something different and not knowing what tomorrow will bring. All the best!

Brian,

I came to your column looking for some info from January, and see you removed your content. :( You deserve a medal or a tribute for lasting this long without a break! Your hard-work and fortitude are appreciated by many. I have respect for your strong work ethic; you earned your status; it wasn't handed to you because you had an "in" with the management, nor did you win a Corporate popularity contest. You took it upon yourself to do the 'right' thing and step in with intelligence and common-sense when it was needed... Your general approach with posting or articles is always above-board and classy <until push goes to shove -heehee-> ... You grew with the 'Vine' and the Vine grew with you!

I landed here in October of 2008. That horrific period right before the elections .. everyone fighting and getting ugly, and those long dissertations by the professional bloggers that would swoop in and 'eat' anything said that went in the 'wrong' direction.... who in their right mind would put up with that @!&#$! ... and we all did and survived! --We've developed a pretty thick skin. You helped me learn; you helped me get back on the track when my 'car' slid off. You were an 'anchor' here and you did it of your own accord.

I hope when you weren't looking, someone slipped on a 'tether' (one of those retractable, dog-leash styles would be nice) assuring that you will be back. As you said, it's about preparation and debate (with conditions..CoH)... we're amateurs, Brian, and we need professionals like you and Dennis, and all of the other great 'Debaters' that have left .. to come back and show us how to do it with 'class' - preparation and the use of the 'spirit' of the CoH, in addition to the letter.

Enjoy your "Hiatus," Brian.
