Does the Front Page Need to Change?
| Yes, definitely! | |
| I don't look at the front page. |
So, as many of you know, I've been tossing around some ideas that I think will help improve Newsvine, primarily related to reshaping the front page so that it better reflects the concept of getting smarter here.
I'm happy to report that the idea has been very well received. My email has been lighting up with people who are supportive of the idea, and Tyler himself weighed in and seemed receptive:
It wouldn't be a bad thing if articles less than two graphs and 200 words were dinged a little.
Now, obviously, he may have a different idea than some of us concerning what being "dinged" entails and he certainly mentions a lower standard than I do. Baby steps.
My first article: Petition: Get Rid of the Polls, Newsvine!
My second article: My Proposal for a Smarter Front Page on Newsvine
I'm happy to say, though, that PenniD has written an article, and there seems to be almost unanimous acceptance on that comment thread that the front page is of very little use or, at least, that it doesn't affect how those people find content, on Newsvine.
Her article: Isn't There Room on Newsvine's Front Page For Us All?
A few choice quotes:
To me, I actually don't think the front page is that important in the first place.
Personally I ignore the front page and go straight to the tracker.
Aha! So I'm not the only one! I think I've looked at the front page maybe 4 times in the almost-year that I've been on the vine! The truth is, I look at the front page only when someone's article refers to it, or when the tracker is kablooey and I want to find something of interest. I'm sure the front page has its uses, but anyone who has more than 10 friends will soon learn that the tracker is the best source of articles on the vine. Anyone who wants more can just Google a topic of interest and find all kinds of stuff on the web.
There is a front page????
Best sellers are more than "500 words". The front page is dominated by emotion not learning. That being said I don't use it anyway.
I can't tell you the last time I bothered to look at the front page.
As per Tyler's suggestion, I use my Watchlist to find most of the articles to read... I didn't even know what the tracker was for a long time. DUH.
don't use the front page...
The "Front Page" is something - a waste of your time.
The front page? ROFLMAO!! I barely glance at that.
I finally found the Front Page...
What I find so humurous about this is that none of us like the default front page and none of use use it...
The front page means little or nothing to me...
I found most of my "friends" on NV through personal articles, and personal comments on "fun" articles, not via the front page.
I have to admit that I basically don't care diddly-squat about the Front Page-- I usually key into Newvine Live & look for topics that sound interesting or seeds/articles/comments by people whose opinons I value.
Other positive signs:
Both of my articles, as well as Penni's article, were voluntarily kept off the front page, yet all three articles were able to attract a large following, and the comment threads did not suffer in any way.
The one person (USAF Vet-923294) who seems to question my idea more emphatically than most (though I'm not convinced at this point that he even understands my idea) chose to use a recent example of an excellent article by Newsviner MalamuteMan as an example of the sort of content that would be excluded (and thus criminally overlooked) based on my concept:
Implementation of a new program feature would close off what, polls, two line articles? and how many are there? 5 a week? 100 a week? At 500 words it would probably effect thousands of articles that are not polls and longer then 3 paragraphs.
Including Mal's article on the new Beta that you posted to tonight. Including Tyler's article that he was going on vacation. Including Calvin's article on his nephew's wish list; and Calvin's article on the YouTube Dog that ran in circles.
The problem? Mal's article was also voluntarily kept off the front page. It suffered no loss of readership. People found it even without it having been featured on the front page. Tyler's article was voluntarily kept off the front page. It suffered no loss of readership.
As for keeping Calvin's "article" consisting of a YouTube video of a dog running in circles off the front page?
God, I hope so. Sorry, Calvin. I'm sure it was very funny.
Last, but certainly not least, PenniD makes a great point, about an article that was on the front page, but which shouldn't be, perhaps destroying the claim that certain content ends up there because it's what is popular or what people want:
It is headlined "untitled" and has zero words. I think it is an attempt by a new writer to post, so I didn't razz on it. It's funny it's on the front page, though, and has been for some time. No words, no comments, and no votes, but it's on the front page under columnists.
Oh, and PenniD? This "netcop" would like to let you know that said article shouldn't have been on the front page, not because it didn't include any words, but because the person posting it doesn't seem to have been following the rules. A little diligence from Newsvine's community (us netcops, basically) is what keeps that sort of crap off the front page, so that those of you who just see this as your little playground can continue to frolic about while the flowers spring up around your feet. In the time it took you to "joke" about that one article from a user that you could have been reporting, I managed to bring the hammer down on a series of coypright infringements. Those of you bemoaning the netcop mentality might consider emulating it, in the future. Once you do, you'll probably see the staff taking your side on other issues, or at least seriously considering your ideas, even when you're in the "minority" -- as you suggest I am, on this front page issue.
So, there we have it. Definitive proof that no one cares what happens to the front page, primarily because no one looks at the front page anyway, as well as proof that not being featured on the front page has very little to do with whether or not your readers will find your content.
I'd like to thank PenniD for posting an article which looks as though it could really move this one step closer to a new concept for Newsvine's front page and I look forward to seeing this through, in one way or another.
The above comments are the sort of unanimous disregard toward a feature that will hopefully help Newsvine make the right choice in making sure that we're doing something to reward effort, in the future.
How about putting the front page should stay the same and having a true poll.
I didn't say a no option, I said leave it alone, or just have the yes vote. There are many that use the front page. And you are saying they shouldn't have the right to vote the way they want it?
Hands you a tanto. :)
How about putting the front page should stay the same and having a true poll.
How about you do it, instead of expecting others to do it for you?
Gee PWT
why don't you. OH it's not your poll either. DOH
Why would I do it? I obviously don't care and am not the one complaining about the poll here, you are. Is that your shtick, if you can't get Brian to do it for you, you'll try to pawn it off on me or anyone else you can find? If you want to see it worded a certain way then go run one yourself. Do it in a single sentence, it'll be so rebellious.
Gee Paul I think you have some reading problems there.
You got your knickers in a bunch over my comment to make a real poll.
You sure you can't do it for Brian. Make it a real poll for him.
I'm sure sooner or later you can/might figure out it was a suggestion. rolls eyes.
One of my first stops is the front page. I use it a lot, but mainly to see the newest seeds and check what user articles have been posted. Also to see the top articles floating around. I do agree that it could use some work though. Also find it silly to see top "articles" make the front page that ask something like "Whats your favorite dog?" or "Who's the dumbest Righty / Lefty". etc etc. Perhaps there could be a "Newsvine Community" page dedicated to just community articles, polls, fun stuff, and not serious news.. instead of just having to check the "Newsvine Community Group". A lot of NV members are not in it to check that nor is the casual Newsvine user probably even aware of it. Then leave the front page for actual news and articles. I dunno. Just an idea.
You sure you can't do it for Brian. Make it a real poll for him.
I repeat, why would I do that when you're the one who has the problem with his poll?
Zoom.
That's the sound you'll hear when they all come here and the point soars right by, over their heads.
If you couldn't make out what I was saying Brian, then maybe 500 words might be a bit much.
If the front page was smarter or more "top story-top writer" I think it would be more useful and used more. One thing that might help to improve it is something we've all talked about before and that is a better breakdown of categories, especially in the publishing phase. Maybe we need a category for Fun, Lazy, and BS articles that are not published to All of NV because they are not aimed at an outside audience. Keep up the good thoughts, Brian.
"So, there we have it, no one cares."
It only makes sense that when so many I came across made statements as, " What front page, we have a front page?; I don't use a front page; where is the front page, " then pretty much the issue is no longer an issue.
I made suggestions similar to SWMM that a simple solution is more categories and the "not published to All of NV" to go along with it is a good idea.
"Now hasn't that been fun boys and girls?" . . . It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood . . .
I propose that Brian Ford's column be the front page. At least he doesn't post pictures of fish as articles.
Brian, I agree your column is "snazzy". I don't like 'flash'; I do like 'class', and imo, you've got it!
I like "flask" and "boffo".
I'm ignorant; would you mind explaining what those are?
Gladly.
"Flask" is a portable purveyor of potable placement.
"Boffo" is, like, socko zoikzers bam! bip! pow! I-love-my-wife-but-oh-you-kid, kinda now, kinda wow, plastic fantastic, moneyshot boo-ya, ca-ching!
ummm, Okaaaaaay!
Well, on flask, I did origianlly wonder if you meant a container for whiskey, but decided you must have had a different intention.
On Boffo, yeah, I have an interpretation from your exuberant, over-flowing, profuse, energetic, lavish, prolific, abundant, vigorous, wanton description of what you want to do ....... btw, are you in the same crowd as "Publius Redux"? (just kidding, he only uses pictures!)
Thank you.
I thought Boffo were lick-um frogs used to get high. My Lab got hold of one and tripped for over an hour.
Oh, gosh, not again! SWMM, I'm ignorant, explain? what are lick-um frogs and how do you get high with them? (sorry - I don't like stupid either!!)
CL1:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bufo
Bufo alvarius, is a potent hallucinogen containing 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin. The venom's psychoactive effects are said to have been known to Precolumbian Native Americans.[
CL1, I lived in FL for a long time. If you never lived there you never heard of them. The Bufo frog is huge and poisonous. Here is some info. This is not the same frog or toad that kids lick or make tea from to get high. This site will tell you everything you don't want to know about licking frogs.
Bufo also were plentiful in Hawaii. Had to keeps dogs away from them.
But I didn't live in Hawaii. I didn't have a passport.
SWMM,
Sorry about the passport thingy. Tough break.
ThreeCents, thank you. All of that info is very interesting; that Bufo frog is different than the Florida version. Amazing how the secretion can kill cats and dogs if ingested, yet only a "high" for humans. Um, think I'll pass if I run into any "Shamans" - lol.
SWMM - Those frogs get up to nine inches long! I enjoyed both links, thank you very much! The article written by "Mr. Encyclopedia" was hilarious! The verbiage sounded like a couple of viners I know. Ewwwww, can't imagine anyone wanting to lick them and risk disease just to see "God smiling" - hmm, then again . . .(just kidding).
Fun and educational - thanks again!
The bufos in Hawaii would get run over my cars and when they got dried out, kids used them as frisbees. Not kidding.
That sounds so funny! I can picture it, too. Thanks.
Flattened roadkills are sometimes known as "frisbee toads" or "sail toads".
ThreeCents, You just solved a mystery for me with your article about Troy A. Davis. I wondered how that avatar was getting away with having so many different monikers. Now I know. These toads are so interesting; thanks for all of the info.
CL1,
Thanks for the interest. That article has a link to good background information on Davis' case. If memory serves a viner named "Vas" was very active in getting users to adopt Davis' picture for their avatar. There was also a great deal letter writing, etc to support a more thorough review of his case. "Wheel" was very active too. Troy sister communicated through Newsvine too. I am going on memory here...
It's interesting to me that I have brought it up a few times [and named names] on how the same person was getting away with different monikers; yet no one commented on why. I don't remember the case, so didn't know the details.
Thanks again.
You want to make the front page a popularity contest, knock yourself out. I thought it was one already.
A) I read the front page.
B) Making an article META doesn't make it a private discussion group.
C) Have you seen some of the comments above.
KGMO, that's interesting, I thought the idea was just the opposite. To display the "News", not popular content before the news.
I don't think the idea ever was to make META a private discussion group, KGMO, please correct me Brian, if that is incorrect.
I thought the idea was to have 'in-house' material featured as its own content to be separate from "Top News", headlines, and select "featured" articles that have substance (developed paragraphs - quality work with importance and significance). I don't understand why the front page of your on-line newspaper has to be considered a "popularity" contest. It should not be. Your front page is merely a way of making yourself look the best you possibly can, and to say "please come look inside". If you were selling your home, wouldn't you want it to look the best possible?
Thanks for the thoughtful reply CL1.
KGMO, thanks for reading it.
