Putting "One Trillion" in Perspective

advertisement

We've heard so much about the pending stimulus bill, and a number we keep seeing thrown around as part of the plan is one trillion dollars.

Most people simply can't comprehend a number that vast, so in an effort to help, I've done some measurements and research that might help "average joe" understand what it means to stimulate Americans to the tune of one trillion dollars.

If you write out one trillion using numbers, it looks a little something like this:

1,000,000,000,000

Emphasis mine, emphasis perhaps not strong enough, but there's only so much you can do.

At any rate, if you were to type that number into Microsoft word, print it out at a conservative font size of 12 (one font size for each of the twelve zeros) and if you were to then use a standard ruler, the resulting number would be over two inches long.

Don't use the metric side, unless you hate America.

If you spell out the word "one trillion" you will find that seven letters from the alphabet appear and four of those letters appear twice.

You can't spell "one trillion" without the word "onion" and everyone knows onions stink after you peel away the top layer.

An anagram for "one trillion" is "rent lion oil" which is clearly a secret liberal pet project and an attempt to lease precious lion oil from Africa, a foreign country, and the liberal elite media has failed to report this.

Use of the word "one" in front of the word "trillion" is a liberal attempt to confuse Americans, who are stupid, by using a small number (1) in front of a confusing concept (billion). The proper way to refer to the number, as a conservative, is thousand billion. Better yet, try thousand thousand million.

If you google the phrase "one trillion" you are a socialist, facist, class whore, because only liberals use google to search the internet.

However, you will also find that one trillion can buy one kick ass War on Terror, but you won't realize that until you scroll past the liberal links, like the one from NASA or the one from california, first.

One Trillion is 11 characters long. Both Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi have names which are also 11 characters long.

Let that sink in for a moment...

John McCain and Mitt Romney both clock in at a more reasonable, far more fiscally responsible 10 characters long. If you subtract just one character from 1,000,000,000,000 you end up with 100 Billion, thus saving American Taxpayers 900 Billion dollars.

That's equal to thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand thousand Ron Paul lovers? Do the math yourselves.

For every sex education class funded by the pork in this bill, which won't create jobs, studies show that there is a risk of, you guessed it, one trillion abortions by, get this, a total of only 10,000 women. As you can see, that's a lot of repeat abortions, by a lot of suddenly empowered women.

The last point I'd like to make:

Barack Obama wasn't born in America.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Yeah, amidst the posturing about knowledge and blah blah blahing that is going on from people who don't really care beyond @!$%#ing and moaning at each other through their typical partisan filters, no one stands a chance of actually learning much of anything on Newsvine.

I learned sometime during the election that whenever you see a lot of anger and particularly a lot of anger focused from one side or the other, the truth of the matter pales in comparison to the rhetoric.

And, what you have here is the same thing you had during the election: People see the writing on the wall, they know the stimulus is going to pass, so they're going to scream, they're going to regurgitate talking points, they're going to pretend they know what they're talking about so that they can talk, talk, talk, and they're going to act angrier than they really are, because they know they've lost.

Desperation sure does make Newsvine pretty pointless.

I don't have any trouble at all comprehending the import and ramifications of the trillion-dollar figure.

But your graphic representation was quite annoying to view. I think removing it, and finding another way to make the same point would make the article less visually irritating.

Interesting, in that I would have said the same thing about the presence of a certain comment, a comment which might have been far more clever, had it been made in a timely fashion, rather than over a month late.

Did it take you all that time to think of the comment, then?

Dammit, you've cracked the liberal commie socialist agenda code! Just know this, Mr. Ford - the CIA will be monitoring all of your phone calls and e-mails from this point forward. If you tell anyone else about Project Lion Oil, you will be captured and tortured. But Guantanamo is too good for you...no, you'll be taken to a much more nefarious and frightening place. Dick Cheney's old underground lair.

Based on nearing's seed on $1.144 Quadrillion in Derivatives, I've made an online slide show with music for folks to easily see the size of US debt against the Derivative Debt. Featured on slideshare.net. You can also download the tiny 1.2 meg file and play in it PowerPoint or email it.

Definately another Liberal con, they know Conservatives won't use Google and a good calculator only goes to a billion. Makes me wonder if all of our elected officials had special calculators made, or are they just guessing at what to do with the extra 3 zero's? Then agin, they are a bunch of zero's.

This has got to be one of the most novel (although credible) approaches to creating a $1 Trillion lifeline for the U.S. economy:

Ok. Fair enough.

Brian, you have made a creative contribution to making apparent the magnitude of the numbers bantered around Washington for the last few months. This trend did not begin with Obama. His predecessor, Bush, convinced Congress that the economy would collapse if it failed to pass the $700 billion TARP. Now it appears that Democrats want to one-up the Republicans by showing that Democrats can spend more, and Democrats are using the same arguments: if you don't do this, and do it right now, the economy will collapse.

Brian, I know that your article is satire, but this subject is nothing to laugh about. Where do we get the money? Reports say that China has $2 trillion in surplus savings. Assuming that China is willing to purchase U.S. government bonds, we should also bear in mind that China has entered its 50th year of record drought. Global warming is positioned to displace hundreds of millions of Chinese from the coastal areas of China. For how long can China prop up the United States before China is compelled by Mother Nature to address its own needs?

This is a narrow scenario that fails to account for a myriad of disrupting factors that could upset the "deal". For example, What if China decides to cash in? What if China decides this crisis is a good cover for invading and occupying Taiwan, an American ally? China has been building up its military. Because of its one-child policy that emphasizes males over females, China has a surplus of adult males that are demographically coming of age at a time coincidentally that the United States has its own surplus of retiring baby boomers. I am sure that these Chinese males would make great soldiers.

INVEST IN THE MILITARY

This is one of the reasons why on Jan 27, 2009, I wrote:

As the next step in the movement toward a New World Order, I recommend a MASSIVE investment in the military.

The economy is bleeding thousands of jobs every day. Americans numbering 524,000 lost their jobs in December 2008.

The military-industrial complex is time-tested and proven as a source of rapid economic stimulus. In addition to fueling job growth, the MASSIVE development of the military would deter any and all adversaries tempted to believe that current global economic instability has weakened America's resolve and standing in the world. Peace and security do not loom near on the horizon.

Social service spending ought to be treated as second in priority in relation to spending on the military.

CHANGE IS COMING

Obama is right that change is coming. But what sort of change? The map of the New World Order is already being redrawn.

Perhaps the current Administration should treat the economy as a national security issue rather than an issue of civil rights or social services. I am not suggesting that the latter is bad per se, but the timing is wrong.

CONCLUSION

Brian, you write, "[Y]ou will also find that one trillion can buy one kick ass War on Terror,". I am advocating a credible way to get a refund on the war by posting the link above. And it is not satire; it is black gold.

Good article, Brian, from a fellow first-generation Newsviner.

INVEST IN THE MILITARY

We already invest more in our military than any other industrialized nation. In fact, we account for 47% of the entire world's military spending. We actually spend 10 times what the next-highest country does. If you take the $470 billion or so (not counting the money spent in Iraq and Afghanistan) and divide it by the US population, that's over $1,500 per citizen spent on our military, while the world average is $150 per citizen. Why would spending MORE be a good idea?

Even if you yourself do not subscribe to a biblical worldview, you err in failing to take into account a factor that motivates arguably a significant portion of the world's population that act upon their worldview. You cannot suddenly or unilaterally suspend the underpinnings of western culture.

Well, that's where we disagree. I doubt that a significant portion of the world's population or even a small portion of western culture cares at all about rebuilding a Jewish temple. If you believe that Heaven exists, good for you. Maybe you'll get to enjoy it when you die. If you honestly believe that rebuilding a temple is going to create some sort of Heaven on earth or Rapture, you're also entitled to that belief.
