Obama Palin' Around with Ayers - or - "Palin Around With the Truth"

advertisement

You might say that, if you're a former small town mayor / sophomore Governor / Republican Vice Presidential nominee from Alaska, putting on a show while adopting an exaggerated fauxy (err, folksy) accent which doesn't tolerate the letter "g", while simultaneously finding yourself on the losing end of trends in both National and vital Swing-State polls.

If you're any less desperate than that at all, "Palin' around" has an entirely different meaning, including (but not limited to) the following examples:

  • Spending game day together painting each others faces.
  • Firing up the grill and putting the moose on the barbie.
  • Playing a rousing round of Wii Sports and drinking beer.
  • Getting together with the wives for an evening of BINGO.
  • Celebrating your children's birthdays together.
  • Taking in the newest summer blockbuster on opening night.
  • Cleaning out clogged gutters together in the fall.

And so on.

Unless Sarah Palin has some sort of super-secret intel which suggests that Obama and Ayers ever took part in any activities similar to the ones listed above - and recent events indicate that if the evidence were super-secret, McCain wouldn't have let her know about it - her assertion that the two are "pals" or were somehow "palin' around" (dontcha know) must be taken as lies at worst, or the worst kind of desperation politics at best.

If misrepresentations like this foreshadow the substance of the oft-mentioned "expanded presence" of Governor Palin, the McCain campaign is likely to find itself spiraling further downward in polling trends.

If McCain didn't learn from the primary-era mistakes (whether they were the mistakes of Clinton or the GOP doesn't much matter) regarding Obama's association with Rev. Wright, they're about to learn them real fast, and in the most painful of ways, as they try the same strategy with Ayers.

Perhaps the phrase "Palin' Around" should now be redefined to mean:

"Lying or stretching the truth and lashing out when backed into a corner."

Sounds like the sort of thing a pit bull might do. Who knew Michael Vick and John McCain had so much in common?

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

With a month to go, McCain is about to get shameful - and he's going to use his attack dog to do it.

Fortunately, Obama isn't going to let them get away with this attempt at 'swift boating' him.

There are numerous articles on NV today about this, and McCains known associations that make Ayers look tame.

Dave Hunter seeded an article titled 'Why is NY Times Continuing to ignore McCains own Billy Ayers?' and

OKC Dem seeded an article titled 'McCain sat on board of ultra-right wind racist group'.

Those and others, along with Obama's new tv ad coming out tomorrow that is saying basically that McCain is telling lies about Obama's character while distracting from the day to day realities of our economy.

This will be something to watch, McCain/Palin spews mud further, while Obama talks to the people about the issues.

Pretty much his standard during the entire campaign. He turned up the levels of the speeches a bit starting in Pueblo, when he was behind after the RNC. But that was about it. I don't think the guy knows the meaning of the word 'panic'.

McCain in January in Michigan:

"I'm going to raise the level of political dialog in America," McCain, R-Ariz., said at a campaign rally in central Michigan, "and I'm going to treat my opponents with respect and demand that they treat me with respect."

I guess when he gave up on Michigan, he also gave up on keeping the promises he made while campaigning there.

I guess when the economy as tanking and you have no plan for it, when the war is unpopular and you are on the wrong side of it, when your credibility as a straight-talker has been tarnished by your flip-flops on every major issue, then there is nothing left but to engage in negative politics.  McCain can't win on the issues, so he has to use lies and fear to try to diminish Obama's credibility.  Sorry, John.  But we have had enough of that.  You lose!

Interestingly enough, I've read that the McCain campaign isn't sweating his refusal to discuss Rev. Wright because they know that it will be hammered through unofficial means, with no direct connection to the campaign.

What a stand-up guy he is.

Well as we've heard plenty, the VP slot is reserved for attack dogs. That's what pundits were calling both Biden and Palin, but the difference is that Biden brings up relevant points with historical context. In a way, Palin was a brilliant choice for VP. She can serve the role of attack <del>pit bull</del> hockey mom, and if any nonsense she spouts is too terribly offensive, McCain can distance himself from it. Whoops! Sorry guys, she's just such a maverick, har har!

Either way the damage is done. The humor site Cracked recently ran an article on brainwashing techniques mostly tied specifically to campaigns. For a humorist site it's a pretty insightful piece. Here's an excerpt:

They call it "Source Amnesia." For instance, you know what a wolverine is, but probably don't remember exactly how you learned that piece of information.....

You'll see this daily, in every election cycle. The entire point of putting a shaky rumor into the press is to force your opponent to deny it. Why? Because They know that the denial works just as well as the accusation. Thanks to Source Amnesia, for millions of people all three of these ...

SMITH DENIES GAY BORDELLO RUMORS

SMITH REFUSES COMMENT ON GAY BORDELLO RUMORS

SMITH ADMITS GAY COCK BORDELLO

... register as the exact same headline.

FWIW - and before I'm called out on it - I'm well aware that "Palin' around" isn't spelled correctly.

1) I think Palling looks like it says "pahwling" anyway and

2) My play on words works better with the intentional misspelling.

As the illustrious VP candidate stated today "The heels and gloves are off."  Well, unprepared one, look out what you wish for.  My wife and I just donated a substantial amount to a 527 that is "gonna rip her wig off, ya betcha."  By the time the progressive 527's get done with McCain and Palin these next 30 days - irrespective of what Obama wants us to do or doesn't want us to do - they're going to get their a.s.s.e.s handed to them.  And unlike the recent bailout, you can take that to the bank!

JD- do they put ads out? I checked out the website but didn't see anything about ads.

I would very much like to see McCain and Palin get the asses handed to them.

They want to play guilt by association, well there's a whole lot of guilt coming their way.

Yes, Angie.  However, you won't see any mention of them on the Obama/Biden website because these ads will be sponsored by independent 527 organizations, and are not sanctioned - and are sometimes decried - by the campaign.  Obama asked the progressive 527's not to engage in attacking McCain/Palin character issues and for a while they complied.  However, there are a goodly number of us progressives with the financial resources to take on the GOP hate mongers by playing their own game - except the difference is that our ads can tell the truth and be equally or more damaging as opposed to the lies and half-truth innuendos of the conservative 527's.

Please don't get me wrong.  Many of us believe that Obama has run the best and most disciplined presidential campaign in modern history and, on an even playing field, would win this election hands-down.  However, we also believe that the future of our country is far too important to permit Obama to "take the high road back to the Senate" while fundamentalist conservatives steal another election.  Therefore, he can stay on the high road and we'll get down in the dirt with the Rovian monsters.

Thanks for the info. I do think Obama and his camp should try to take the high road and keep his hands clean. But, that shouldn't prevent others from swift boating McCain and Palin. There are plenty of truths out there about McCain and Palin that the public should know about. Damming truth!

My modest group 'Publishers and Authors for Obama' at the Obama website raised over $17,000 for the campaign with 70 members.

Well...we're all starving writers. (laughs)

We watch as the tattered remains of an American political party begin to wash ashore, their once mighty vessel having been recklessly cast against the rocks by Captain John "Madman" McBligh and his trusty sidekick, Sarah "Winky-Winky" Palin.

Good grief. What a cast of bozos. The Straight-Talk Express is more like the phony-baloney pony.

The only downside to these goobers losing the election is the devestation their defeat will bring to Letterman and SNL>

McCain/Palin are becoming very desperate. Palin said at the VP debate that the Democrats keep going back to the past. Heck, this woman is a hyprocrite and very absent minded. She is now practicing the same ideology she condemns. Bill Ayers did not give a $700 billion welfare check to Wall Street, he did not foreclosed on people's homes, he did not create job lost , he did not start a war that is now bleeding tax payers, he did not lost Bin Laden in the caves of Pakistan, ETC. YOU GET MY POINT. If there is any association to be made is McCain/Bush 8 years of Republican hardship and poor judgments. McCain is out of touch. Folks he has seven mansions and lost count. Palin is just a follower doing McCain dirty work. Remember McCain said he would not engage in dirty politics, well, he is now using his puppet to act out for him. McCain/Palin have nothing to offer the American people. What they are offering is so weak that mud slinging seem like a better package for "change is coming"... to the American people... the only change is Palin changing McCain diapers. Return to the real issues that is plagueing this country please!

I have to say, before this election cycle I actually respected John McCain's character - although I disagreed with most of his views.  I found him to be, generally, a stand-up guy.  At this point, there is no changing my view: John McCain is a slimeball - P.O.W. or not!
