Yes, yes. I know it's popular to think that the rhetoric on Newsvine sucks. (Sometimes, yes, it sucks.) I even see people wishing for the good 'ol days, and having been here pretty much since it was possible to be here, I often wonder which days those were? There has always been fights, they have always been caused by people on both sides of the fence, and people on both sides of the fence have always ludicrously alleged that it was "the other side" that is most at fault.
With that said, I'm seeding this flickr photo, because it hit Digg, is now at 287,192 views, and the comment thread is a perfect example of the sort of thing I've never seen on Newsvine. This is the sort of vitriol and comment trolling that is worth losing sleep over. This is the sort of overt racism and immaturity that it is worth closing an account over.
When Newsvine sinks to this level, I'll be the first to drop my account, to say I can't handle it anymore. I can assure you that I've seen (and been, in some cases, party to) the worst of Newsvine -- and not one of those instances comes anywhere close to this sort of comment thread, not even from the drive-by trolls, or the long-term asshats.
Yes, rhetoric can get heated, and sometimes even ugly, on Newvsine, but there's always a place to retreat to where the conversations are civil, funny, serious without being mean-spirited, etc.
So, all those who don't like it when people seem like cops for citing the Code of Honor, or who worry too much about those with uneven reporting habits (it balances out) or, in general, those who decry the "censorship" of deleted comments, need to realize that all of those things add up to Newsvine not being your typical community. And yes, all of the "meta" content that you love to hate plays a huge role in that, as well.
Discouraged by what you see on Newsvine? Read through the seeded comment thread.
You are right, if we ever sink to that level, I am pulling the plug, that was sad.

Yeah, that's why I don't hang out on Digg. I've got better things to do then be called a @!$%# all day.
Newsvine attracts an entirely different audience, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
No, I don't eat fried lice."
Shouldn't that be 'flied lice.'?
Annnnnd...it took that long for Newsvine to sink to the same level.
Well, not quite true. "Sinking to the same level" certainly requires more than one person riffing on one comment from your thread, which was actually on-topic as per the t-shirt. The original poster was suggesting other humorous t-shirt comments (each combatting stereotypes) and while I think making a grammatical correction (on a purposefully problematic phrase) on one comment out of all the possible comments to remark upon is a weird idea, it doesn't really sink to the level you see on your Flickr photos.
At any rate, I never said "a few individual comments" won't ever sink to Digg's level (they will, though, again, I don't think this one does, at all) but that there's a sense of community here that seems to keep those comments in check.
Now, if anyone jumps over here with the sort of rhetoric you're dealing with, you'll find out why: I'll either report it, or outright delete the worst of it. And, when I'm accused of being a "censor" -- the community will come and back me up, and the message will be loud and clear.
We don't want, or accept that sort of dialogue on Newsvine, and if deleting it = censorship, well:
I heart censorship.
Still, you're deservedly defensive based on the @!$%#-storm you're enduring -- over there -- but I think you're overstating the magnitude of Wheel's comment.
Annnnnd...it took that long for Newsvine to sink to the same level.
annnd...someone suffers from a terminal lack of a sense of humor.
Actually, guys, my remark towards Wheel's comment was completely a joke. I didn't find his comment offensive at all. Sorry it wasn't more clear that I what I said was tongue-in-cheek. I thought the long "annnnnd" would make it obvious, but apparently not.
good on you. :)
I guess this is part of the problem I see with the really bad stuff you see elsewhere, you're automatically on the defensive: It generally only takes one or two misconstrued comments for things to go way out of line. In general, it's not hard to believe the worst, because it's not all that rare that you see something absolutely horrendous posted as a comment. Nothing is really out of the question in online forums.
I think, in general, certain topics need to be treated more like thin ice -- walking on tiptoes, because people are already wary, already expecting the worst, and that makes it even more difficult to detect good intent or humor.
The bottom line is that people need to act in public online forums the same way they would in public OFFLINE forums. I'd be willing to be that if most of those guys say Vanessa in her t-shirt in real life, they'd never have the audacity to say something like, "no boom-boom, no visa!". Make a joke like that in private, amongst friends? Sure. In public? Probably not. But, online -- even in in public forums, they're more than willing to make a jackass of themselves.
It really boils down to the first rule of understanding online communities: soap box + anonymity = @!$%#s.
Period.

Wow. Thanks for the reminder as to why I stay here.
Yeah, really. I couldn't stand to be a part of that hate. Geesh.
That really was ugly....Did anyone read any of the comments on Heath Ledgers death ? Many of those were almost as bad, it was really sad to see.
Digg users are the scum of the internet.
That's a bit general. As a frequent Digg user I find that offensive.
Yeah, I certainly wouldn't go that far, but I would say that Digg seems to attract an above average number of asshats, and is set up in a manner which doesn't discourage their participation.
I agree totally with that.
After looking at that mess, I'd have to say that Newsvine has a pretty good formula: allow us to police ourselves by reporting and or deleting. I think Ill stay here for a while... : )
