Google Analytics Comes to Newsvine

advertisement

For those of us who have been wanting to track our own stats on Newvsine -- today is a beautiful day:

Customize Column :: Tracking

Or, just go here.

To use Google Analytics, you must sign up for an account, and then paste a block of code into your "tracking" tab on Newsvine.

Once you save that, your GA page will update within ~ 24 hours.

Once your stats begin to fill in, you'll be privy to the following information:

  • Information about those who visit your column;
  • How long they stay;
  • What browser they use;
  • How much traffic your column receives;
  • Where your visitors linked in from;
  • The answer to life, the universe and everything;

And more...

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I ran though setup pretty quickly, saved the code into my tracking tab, and am now waiting for GA to update with my stats. (My column was recognized, so it appears to be working properly.)

Setup may not be as quick if you don't already have a gmail account, but as I did have one, I'm not sure how much more difficult it will be for those who start from scratch.

I should also mention -- this is a big step for those of us who want to be invited to certain events. These statistics can be extremely helpful when requesting invites or press badges to concerts, happenings, etc.

Unless, of course, your stats aren't very impressive.

Nifty feature. It would (theoretically) be easier for me to get some press kits from the major devs, which is something I tried a while back and didn't succeed on for whatever reason. Unless, of course, the stats come back and I have like 30 hits a day.

Having a problem with google not recognizing the tracking code on my column. Hopefully, it's temporary. Might be related to NV server update propagating, not sure.

Related question: what about groups?

I've been curious about how Gamevine is doing as an entity as well. I know it wouldn't show article stats, since the articles aren't listed as "gamevine.newsvine.com/article", but it would give me an idea of how many people are viewing the front page and accessing the articles that way, versus how many have me (or Russ or Obleo, etc) on their watchlists. Actually, I wonder if you could do that with tag markings too, like newsvine.com/gamevine.

Hmm...

Well, I thought of groups too -- but then, we don't have a way to paste the code in for our groups.

I suspect that this is a pilot program, and when we see how that works, we'll get more ways to use it.

With that said, this was apparently "quietly" rolled out -- but I figured as it was publicly available (wasn't referred to as a public/private beta, or anything like that) it was safe to write about it. I figured someone would do it if I didn't, and -- finding out about this is a bit like being handed Pandora's Box. I couldn't resist.

Though, as always -- the more they know about how we like these features, the better.

Odd -- this posted to some groups that I'm pretty certain I didn't check. (And didn't post to a group that I'm pretty certain I did check.) If it winds up in a group and does not belong there -- delete away.

I'll see if it corrects itself, if not -- I'll edit and republish to the correct groups.

I wonder how long Newsvine has been using GA to track our own columns - you'll notice that there is already an analytics tracker on every column page, presumably Newsvine's since it's the same GA account on every page.

how about six by seven...

He said he's a huge geek, not a huge abacus.

But, he's definitely a huge geek.

From wikipedia:

At the end of the first radio series, the television series, and the book The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the second of the five-book 'trilogy', Arthur Dent — as the last human to have left the Earth before its destruction, therefore the portion of the computer matrix most likely to hold the question — attempts to discover the Question by extracting it from his unconscious mind, through pulling Scrabble letters at random out of a sack. The result is the sentence "WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU MULTIPLY SIX BY NINE?" Arthur then remarks, "I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe." The generation of this question is actually impossible with a single, standard set of Scrabble letters. Such a set only has two Ys; but the set shown in the TV series, and referred to in the books, has clearly been handmade from memory, so the question buried within Arthur's brainwaves may have influenced him in creating it. In the original radio version of the story, however, it is made clear that Arthur has been travelling all along with a pocket Scrabble set from Earth.

"Six by nine. Forty-two."

"That's it. That's all there is."

The explanation is that the program (Earth) would have run correctly if not for the interference of events such as the crash landing of the Golgafrinchans causing them to replace the original inhabitants. These important modifications introduced error into the program and caused it to discover the wrong question; the question in Arthur's mind has been the wrong question all along.
It was later pointed out by readers that 6 × 9 = 42 if the calculations are performed in base 13, not base 10, which gives an answer of 54. Douglas Adams later averred that he was not aware of this at the time, and repeatedly dismissed this as an irrelevant concoction, saying that "nobody writes jokes in base 13 [...] I may be a pretty sad person, but I don't make jokes in base 13."

Some keywords people used to find me:

"hyatt regency disaster" (This one kicks ass. I'm going to be updating that story soon.)

"how does reality tv manipulate reality for entertainment?" (This one cracks me up.)

And then some typical apple related searches and a coupe related to Nintendo -- and a Roger Ebert query.

All in all -- very useful information.

The vast majority of my referrals come from within Newsvine -- from other columnists.

12% of my visitors have visited over 200 times. 43% have only visited once.

My new vs. returning visitors was evenly split.

60% of my visitors use Firefox. 18.21 use Safari, and this is tied with Internet Explorer.

People stay for an average of 18 minutes.

Neato!
