Rumor Mill Roundup: Macworld Expo 2007

advertisement

(Dismantling the rumor mill in the lead-up to MacWorld Expo 2007.)

Come gather 'round now children, it's that time of year: Pundits, rumor-sites, Apple-related news sites, tech blogs and haters alike will soon put forth their best guesses as to what Uncle Steve has in store for the new year.

What this is not: An example of a pundit, rumor site, tech blog, Apple-related news site or hater making predictions about new Apple products that may or may not be announced at the upcoming MacWorld Expo -- 2007 edition.

What this is: Predictions regarding the predictions of those noted above. (In doing so, a representative example from each category will be utilized.)

Here goes nothing:

--------------------

Think Secret (The Rumor Sites)

--------------------

Expect vague predictions which will seem bolder than they actually are -- all of which will be backed by mysterious "sources" which have (not so mysteriously) become less and less accurate over the last couple of years. They'll likely prognosticate something obvious and then tack on a couple of random features in an effort to "predict different" than their rivals the biz. A few days after the expo, they'll explain that they have a great track record due to having "predicted" the obvious -- despite muffing the finer details which made up the bulk of their "actual" predictions. It is also possible that they will blame a poor track record on last minute changes by a spiteful Steve Jobs.

Sample prediction: Apple plans to announce a ship date for Mac OS X -- Leopard. Think Secret sources say that it may involve a free version of dot Mac with an increase in capacity to 200GB. (Sources are unclear whether dot Mac will actually be free and the increase may be much smaller than indicated.)

--------------------

Rob Enderle/Paul Thurrot/etc. (The Pundits)

--------------------

Sources aren't clear on this, but expect both to make bold predictions about hardware releases, only to summarily dismiss any chance that said hardware will 1) sell as a result of 2) not being worth a damn. Both will also find some way to work in a pitch for Vista and/or Microsoft's Zune. Strong potential for predictions regarding the downfall of Apple by 2008. We may even be treated to: "Steve Jobs might not, but should, announce his resignation as CEO, for the good of Apple -- which I love dearly, despite all evidence to the contrary."

Sample prediction: Apple will of course release an iPhone and it is likely that hordes of Apple Zealots will fellate Steve Jobs on their way out the door. I expect to receive hate mail about my accurate assessment of the soon-to-be-announced product, which follows: The iPhone will iSuck. It will be underpowered when compared to the new version of the Zune, which will eventually offer more features.

--------------------

Slashdot (The Tech Blogs)

--------------------

My sources couldn't turn up predictions, per se. Expect the following: "It's that time of year again, which means that Apple will soon release new toys for us to turn up our nose at. A cursory glance at the rumor-mill shows that we can expect 1) more DRM 2) no OGG support 3) underpowered specs 4) great UI at the expense of your ability to take the device apart and 5) more one button devices. As such, we will forego the prediction stage and move right into the annoying tech snob phase."

Likely description of the event: "Set phasers to under-whelm."

When discussing Slashdot, sources often referenced Dwight, from NBC's The Office: "Ooooooh, man, is that a Prism DuroSport? It's like an iPod but they're better, because it's chunkier and more solid."

Sample prediction: None. (See above.) The slashdot crowd lacks the necessary imagination to play this game and will thus resort to describing whatever Apple releases as inferior to some (other) device that no one will ever buy. Half of the comment thread will involve an overused in-joke that will (once again) be modded up as funny. The other half will poke fun at Apple for not offering a right-clicking mouse. (Despite the fact that Apple does offer such a device.)

--------------------

Daring Fireball (Apple-related News Sites)

--------------------

Expect these sites to treat the Expo a bit like an office NCAA tourney bracket -- a fun event that can be discussed with peers but which won't be taken too seriously. As such, predictions will range from unabashed wish-lists to serious evaluations of likely offerings. Unlike most who prognosticate about the Expo, these predictions will involve a modicum of reality but will nonetheless make few claims of accuracy. During the big reveal: Predictions will be abandoned for a play-by-play analysis of actual announcements as they occur.

(My sources now indicate that Gruber will play it safe by not making predictions regarding the eta of my Daring Fireball t-shirt, which I pine for.)

Sample prediction: Not necessary. Actual predictions found here.

--------------------

The Haters (You know who you are.)

--------------------

Sources indicate that this crowd will react in a fashion similar to the tech blog crowd. The difference: This will come from a deep cynicism and irrational hatred towards anything involving Apple, and not so much as a result of snobbery regarding technology. Predictions about actual products aren't likely -- but predictions about the quality of (any announced) products are certain: "They will all @!$%#ing suck and all you Apple fags are stupid and would eat a @!$%# sandwich if it were served by your leader, Steve Jobbs -- and you'd pay too much for it, to. iTunes sucks!"

Sample prediction: See above.

--------------------

Bonus Prediction (As the Apple Turns.)

--------------------

The world's greatest defunct Apple-related web site will remain defunct. The departure will continue without an official announcement and as such the best track-record I've ever come across (regarding new-product predictions and Apple) will miss yet another Expo. Sources indicate that this site was run by Steve Jobs himself and that Apple's blogging policy forced its unfortunate demise.

Sample prediction: ".........."

There you have it -- predictions about the predictions you're likely to encounter between now and the end of Steve Jobs' keynote speech at the Expo. Complete accuracy is a certainty: My sources guarantee it.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

And now I will leave the first comment in this thread -- which I plan to vote for.

This is all in good fun, so feel free to make your own prediction predictions and/or -actual- predictions about what we can expect from the Expo.

I'm hoping we'll see a unified UI in Leopard, and I'm expecting a launch date announcement.

I think it would be awesome if the Apple phone didn't get announced or released, but the much-rumored but now forgotten "true video iPod" did.

Something makes me think that Leopard is closer to shipping than they have indicated so far. I am guessing that it would be a huge marketing coup to get it on the street two weeks before the consumer versions of Vista hit the shelves.

My prediction is that Leopard will be shipping immediately after the keynote Tuesday.

The only way that could be the case is if they're deliberately seeding less-than-ready versions to the beta community, which I don't see happening. From what I've been reading, Leopard is still very not-ready-for-prime-time.

I agree, spiffie. At this point, Apple will gain much more from releasing a very good and very stable upgrade to their OS in a couple months than they will releasing something that doesn't have everything they promised (hmmm... sound familiar?) a couple weeks before Vista.

I just want a new version of iLife and any other goodies they'll throw at me so I can finally order a 20" iMac and make the switch! :D

My goal at the end of every Macworld is that there is something "free" for me to download and play with -- even if its just an updated iTunes with some new features.

Personally, my main area of interest is iTV (or whatever it will be called) and the content that I would ultimately use it for. (I'm hoping for updated info on movies -- more studios, better quality, etc.)

Probably the most interesting predictions I've read (and one that would likely blow away all other announcements) is a Beatles on iTunes announcement. It's towards the end of his post.

That's -so- big that it could even be the "one more thing" style announcement and not seem like a let down.

At any rate, the above link is a great example of the type of predictions found under the Daring Fireball/Mac News Sites category. (Loads of fun to read, and yet realistic in the way it spells out expectations.)

Still, there's a lot of uncertainty and a lot of likely dead ends (and several roads that will lead somewhere) and Apple is only feeding the speculation by putting up an intriguing splash screen on the Apple.com home page.

Honestly, there are just too many devices that "could" surface for me to feel like making predictions -- I'm just going to hold out hope that the things I want are announced and not bother guessing what "will" be announced.

Either way, I think this is going to be a really kick ass Keynote. Why isn't that day a national holiday, again?

It'll be a 2 hour kick-ass keynote.

And it's probably not a national holiday because of that whole "market share" thing. ;)

Oh man, if Stevemas were a national holiday, that'd be amazing.

Of course, since RIT doesn't believe in holidays, I still wouldn't get the day off of school.

I somehow managed to be so unlucky that my very first class after returning from our two week winter break (which is mid-term, so I can't skip the class, either) is scheduled for 12:00 noon EST. So I am going to be very distracted during class. I still haven't decided whether it's worth the risk of me accidentally saying something out loud during class to read the live blogging, or if I should try to suppress my anticipation and read the transcripts two hours later. :-S

Alright. Back away everyone, because I'm summoning Nostradamus and this can be dangerous.

The event will be big, with a very clean "look" to it. Steve Jobs will wear a turtleneck. There will be something with "i" in the name. Steve Jobs will use the phrase "oh, one more thing." No matter what the product, Leo Laporte will buy one within a week of it becoming available.

In seriousness, the iPhone seems likely, and having a new iLife suite prepared doesn't seem like a ridiculous prediction to make. And just to shoot out a crazy one, I'll say that this year they'll use the new Intel structure to try to push Macs as a viable gaming platform. There's really little reason not to anymore; gaming is the last really uber-solid reason to own a PC over a Mac, and Apple should get some sort of initiative started before Microsoft gets too far in its "Games for Windows" campaign.

You forgot the fanboy predictions: "I think apple will finally release both the iTV and iPhone. Both will have 200 gig hard drives, and you'll be able to sync the 300 free TV shows they'll give you in between the two"

And I also dearly miss As the Apple Turns.

I have been reading a lot about this in anticipation of the expo. I believe that most predictions concerning the iTV, iPhone, and leopard are correct, but the mac expo is generally all about the hardware, so I think there is going to be a suprise or two concerning the computers themselves.

My prediction: A new desktop which won't be white and will have some nifty features. They have been doing really well with the notebooks, and I think this will be a good time to pump up the volume in the desktop department.

Honestly, the new Parallels beta kick so much ass that I'd be absolutely stunned if Apple made something better.

If Apple wants to be in the space, it had better buy Parallels, because those guys are doing it right.

I dont think Apple will buy Parallels.

I think theyll either release their own or maybe turn boot camp into some sort of user switching-esque system - IE switch too "Windows user" and the Mac does that spinning cube thing it does with user switching.

If Apple do buy Parallels or make theyre own, I sincerely hope they will have hardware 3D support - using their in depth knowledge of the Apple hardware. I think the 3D support is a deal killer as they really need to support games and the other 3D Windows apps out there. I certainly wont be buying Parallels until I can run games (the only reason I have Windows on my MBP).

Here's MacWorld 2007 predictions from RoughlyDrafted: what's likely to be revealed, some promising ideas that are less likely to get delivered, and things that have no chance of happening, from the iPod, Phone and iTV, to Macs and MacBooks, and in Software.
